Frances McCandless Policy Director, Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action Frances McCandless is Director of Policy at NICVA, the umbrella body for the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland. Frances is responsible for the operation of the organisation’s policy and research work, including European Policy, Public Affairs, human rights and equality work. Frances was previously employed by NICVA as Head of Communications and for seven years in this post she was editor of SCOPE social affairs magazine. Frances’s career in the voluntary and community sector goes back 14 years and she has worked with young people and in housing.

Maureen Piggot - Director, Mencap Northern Ireland Maureen Piggot manages Mencap’s programmes in Northern Ireland. These include campaigning, supporting a membership network and delivering a range of services. Born in South Africa, Maureen taught in special needs schools there. In the 1980’s she moved to Northern Ireland where she worked in social services for ten years before becoming Director of Mencap in Northern Ireland. Maureen has experience of the public, voluntary and business sectors inSouth Africa,England, theUnited States andNorthern Ireland.

Mary Mc Kee, Executive Director, Groundwork N.I. Mary McKee has worked in the NGO sector for eighteen years, ten of which have been at Director Level with two voluntary sector organisations. She was instrumental in founding a childcare organisation Playboard in 1985. As Director she led the organisation through a period of dramatic growth to become a high profile agency to the forefront of pioneering services for children and young people.Mary joined Groundwork, the UK’s leading environmental regeneration agency in 1997 as the first Executive Director of Groundwork Northern Ireland. The organisation had two staff members and a turnover of £40K. Mary McKee has repositioned Groundwork Northern Ireland to be one of the leading Groundwork Trusts in the United Kingdom. Part of this success has been the result of developing key projects in areas of high social and economic need – in partnership with communities who have witnessed some of the worst of Northern Ireland’s conflict. Today Groundwork has 30 staff, two regional offices and a turnover of £4million.Groundwork Northern Ireland has pioneered the use of contested space as a method to engage communities to develop a vision for their area and to resolve issues and areas of conflict. Mary has recently presented the work of Groundwork in relation to regeneration and community cohesion at conferences in New York, Berlin, London and Edinburgh. Mary has two grown up children Joe 28 and Maeve 26 and a new grandson Sam.
